"Grandma's History Tour" - Antigua

Places we will visit on this shore excursion:

Betty's Hope Sugar Plantation – This historical area was a sugarcane plantation in Antigua. It was established in 1650, shortly after the island had become an English colony. Currently the buildings have been developed as an open-air museum with a visitor center.

Devil's Bridge – A natural rock arch on the eastern coast Antigua. The area around the arch features several natural blow-holes where water sprays up, from action of waves from the Atlantic Ocean. Great panoramic photo opportunity.

Nelson's Dockyard – After England acquired colonial British Antigua and Barbuda in 1632, the English Harbour became a focal point for the establishment of a naval base. Construction of the modern Naval Dockyard began in the 1740s. Among the original buildings are two hotels, a museum, craft and food shops, restaurants, and a large marina.

Shirley Heights Lookout Point – Explore historical, partially-restored fortifications of the harbour's colonial observation post. The view is spectacular from atop the hillside at Shirley Heights. See across the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea all the way to Montserrat and Guadaloupe. Bring your camera for amazing photos.

Fig Tree Rainforest Drive – Relax and enjoy the natural landscape you are driven through the lush foliage of Antigua's rain forest. View banana trees, local villages and exotic greenery along the way.
